Pizza Cottage - Spicy Thai Chickein -- Mt Vernon Rd, Newark

Saturday night is a great time for a pie.  The Buckeyes were victorious, and I wanted to try something different at Cottage Pizza.  I entered, sat at the small bar, and grabbed the menu.  For some reason, the Spicy Thai Chicken specialty pizza caught my eye. I asked the bartender if it was any good.  He told me it was very good and was his second favorite pizza on the menu (The BLT pizza was his favorite).

He told me it was especially good with Ranch dressing.  OK.  I am good with that.  I got a medium pie to go.  It was a great choice.  First off, the crust at Pizza Cottage is a real strength.  It's thin crust, but not too thin crust.  Also, it hits that crispy / chewy groove that is so elusive in most pies.  Each bite has a hint of crunch, but it quickly gives way to the chew that let's you know that the crust was hand made with dough that was tossed that very day.

Another plus on this pie is the topping volume.  Lots o' toppings!  This pie uses Pizza Cottage's Thai chili sauce as the pie sauce and provolone as its cheese.  From there, generous amounts of chicken, bacon, red onion, jalapeno and pineapple to the point that some amount of ingredients fall of the pie pieces as you take each bite.  Not complaining here at all.  I'd rather have my pie providing ground snacks for my dog than having low volume toppings that make you question whether or not you are eating tomato soup on a Saltine.

A quick word on pineapple just because I have to.  I am not one of those pineapple haters who consider it to be a pie foul to have the Hawaiian treat adorn a pizza.  If you are having a Hawaiian pie, I'd expect to see pineapple on it.  Here, though, we have a Thai pie.  Not completely sure pineapple belongs on a Thai pie, but it tasted good, and I am not complaining.  I certainly ate it all!

The flavor combinations came together well.  This was a refreshing alternative to a traditional pie.  The pie was baked perfectly, and the spice level was not significantly hot.  The jalapenos were fresh and added a kick, but I ended up adding some Maddog 357 Sriracha hot sauce to "kick it up a notch".  But that is just me.  I am a bit of chili head.  And the Ranch suggestion?  It was a good one.  I like Ranch on most pizzas, and this was no exception.

In summary, Pizza Cottage Spicy Thai Chicken Pizza is a winner if you are looking for a pie that is non traditional, well made, and full of flavor and toppings.  I would definitely order it again.
